Technologists to rescue

Reading scripts of our ancestors have always been a daunting task. But these are treasure troves getting unravelled by Ronojoy Adhikari of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Satish Palaniappan of the  SSN College of Engineering.  Their deep learning algorithm can now help read the Indus scripts. Images of artefacts such as a seal or pottery can be scanned and the algorithm recognises the writing from the picture and decodes the text. The technology that they have used is similar to the ones used in self-driving cars.

Another technology helps visually-challenged people identify quickly the bus signs. 75 MTC buses across 10 routes in the city have been fitted with radio frequency transmitters. This technology would assist them to determine the buses without the need to enquire anyone. Though this is the first step towards inclusion, if continued, it will help Chennai becoming an ideal smart city.
