Chennai airport to become solar-powered

After being in the news for all the wrong things, here is,  at last, some good news about the Chennai Airport.

A 1.5 MW solar power plant will soon become operational on top of the cargo terminal. This is a part of the blueprint of the 7.5 MW solar energy plant that the airport has planned. The annual savings will be Rs 8 crore or 40 per cent of the current spending. The facility will be inaugurated anytime soon. The project began in May 2014 with a MoU between the Airport Authority of India and Solar Energy Corporation of India. This move not only helps curb electricity bill but also helps the airport to reduce its carbon footprints. Following the thread would be Madurai and Tiruchi, which are planning to set up similar facilities. Leading all airports in the world, Kochi became the first airport to be fully powered by solar energy. With abundant sun gleaming throughout the country, the prospects of tapping the natural energy to fuel our country’s growth makes sense.
