Hawker’s paradise gets a permanent place

It’s been three decades since Pondy Bazaar became a roadside shopping paradise. From fancy dresses to toys, flowers and vegetables, name it you got it. Competing with huge stores, these street shops were dominant with their variant varieties and cheap rates. As part of the Corporation’s initiative to make its wards pedestrian friendly, the hawkers were shifted to the Corporation complex that was built to house them.

The three storied complex has about 170 shops in each floor. The ground floor will house the fruits, vegetables and flower vendors. The rest of the floors will host other merchandises. Once the police gathered to evacuate the hawkers, they themselves left the place peacefully carting away their goods. For once the big shops and empty pavements of Pondy Bazaar were visible.  Though the hawkers are happy that they do not need to pay bribes as they do not run their shops on pavements now, they are still apprehensive if their impulsive shoppers would come and visit them in the complex. It’s a welcome move to de-congest the T Nagar commercial hub.  But will shopping be the same again in Pondy Bazaar?
