Enticing pest traps

As the world turns organic, scientists at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, have devised synthesized pheromone traps, an innovative alternative to hazardous pesticides. Pheromone is a chemical secretion by female pests to attract male counterparts. Chemically prepared pheromone is infused in a centimetre long silicone capsules and laid out in traps in fields. These traps lure and kill male pests thus ensuring that female eggs go unfertilised. This prevents proliferation. Further, use of these capsules reduces pesticide cost to farmers by about one eighth. Efforts are being made to similarly exterminate female pests too.
