Illegal mining of sand

The Tamil Nadu government decided to probe the illegal sand mining and has constituted a special team to look into the alleged illegal mining in the Tuticorin district. The team is headed by Revenue Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi following a report submitted by former District Collector Ashish Kumar stating that 2.25 lakh tonnes of mineral sand had been illegally mined. One of the reports by the Collector mentions that around 230,000 tonnes of beach sand have been quarried in Vaippar village without the state government permission.

As part of this probe, six sand quarries will be inspected by the special team.
