Vedanta to close Lanjigarh refinery

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Lanjigarh plant of Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL) Dr Mukesh Kumar has intimated the state government that the factory would be closed from 5 December 2012. The decision is a severe indictment on the efficiency and integrity of the state as VAL feels cheated. They were promised raw material, which is abundant in the state, way back in 2003, when the MoU was signed. A decade later, they are still waiting.

Vedanta is the only private corporate body, which has already invested to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore in its green field ventures in the recent years in the state. Despite such extensive exposure in Odisha when secretaries of the state government do not grant even an audience to its functionaries to voice its genuine grievances, quite naturally it feels being let down!

In a recent poll, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik was rated as the most popular CM of India; but if industrial woes of such gargantuan proportions continue to hang fire for long, then 2014 may see a change of season. Didn’t Harold Wilson say: “a week is a long time in politics”!
