Born: Jan 23, 1926 
Father: K S Thackeray, advocated the creation of   linguistic state of Maharashtra Began with the Free Press Journal as a cartoonist Formed his own political weekly, Marmik  1926-65 

Formed  Shiv Sena Campaign against South Indians, Gujaratis, Marwaris and later Biharis  
1966-88

Sena’s newspaper Saamna was launched in 1989. Shiv Sena wrested control of trade unions in Mumbai from the Communist Party  of India. Allied with BJP. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won the 1995 Maharashtra State Assembly elections.  Thackeray was the   remote control  1989-98

On 28 July, 1999 Thackeray was banned from voting and contesting in any election for six years Once praised Hitler saying, “I am a  great admirer of Hitler, and I am not ashamed to say so! … He was a wonderful organiser and orator, and I feel that he and I have  several things in common...   1999-2011 

Died on 17 Nov  2012 Accorded state funeral 20 lakh people attended The government of Maharashtra allowed his funeral to take  place at Shivaji Park due to the size of the expected crowd; it was the first public funeral in the city since that of   Bal GangadharTilak’s in 1920. He is the only non-MP to get obituary references in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.  2012
