AL wins Deming prize again

Truck and bus maker Ashok Leyland expects the M&HCV industry to grow by 5-10 per cent in the current fiscal and the company is also likely to increase in line with the industry. With a robust recovery in volumes in Q2 and further recovery anticipated in Q3, AL is likely to register decent growth in the current fiscal.

The company is likely to report further improved performance in FY19/20, on the wake of strict overloading restrictions, better freight availability, increased government focus on infrastructure spend and pre-buying ahead of BS VI implementation in 2020. Over the term, the company also expects significantly higher contribution from non-India CV segments such as defence and exports.

The company has another reason to celebrate, owing to the receipt of the prestigious 2017 Deming Prize for its Hosur Unit II manufacturing facility for Total Quality Management. In 2016, Ashok Leyland Pantnagar plant had become the first truck and bus plant in the world and also the only CV manufacturer outside Japan to win this coveted award. With the Hosur unit II plant winning this year, Ashok Leyland becomes the only CV manufacturer outside Japan to achieve this feat consecutively.
