TGS- The king storyteller

I was happy to attend a function organised by Selvakumar of Maruti  Power Control Systems to remember Thenkachi G Swaminathan (TGS). For 18 long years, TGS enthralled millions by his five minute info for the day (Indru Oru Thahaval) through the All India Radio. It was his unique style of conveying information through a short story spread over five minutes and finishing it with a punch and a moral. TGS did this with clock-like routine every day for long in a direct dialogue intelligible to all. His modesty, humility, simplicity and goody, goody nature that spread love and kindness for all was well-potrayed in the book Thenkachi- Kathai Rajavin Kathai by Komal Anbarasan, chief editor at Makkal TV. I was happy the function was well-attended with the hall overflowing. Swami Vimurthananda, BJP leader L Ganesan, film director SP Muthuraman, Tamil litterateur Iniyavan and others recalled the multifaceted personality of TGS.

Graduating from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University TGS served his village Thenkachi in Thanjavur district with passion and worked for AIR for 25 years and later for Sun TV. He was in great demand to address literary meets spread across the globe. He maintained a simple living till the end and was never influenced by fame or money. The royalties and payments he received were instantly given away to charities and public causes.

AIR is rebroadcasting the five minute treasures of TGS who made such excellent use of narration through short stories, great morals and humour with a punch like O Henry. We need more TGSs.
