Rahman at CIC

Chennai International Centre presented music maestro A R Rahman in conversation with the renowned cinematographer Bharat Bala. The programme attracted the largest crowd at CIC so far; students of Madras School of Economics turned up in strength and repeatedly cheered Rahman. For an important and topical earlier address on education reforms by the renowned educationist Dr M Anandakrishnan, the students were missing!

Bharat Bala, the producer of several memorable pieces like Vande matharam, Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, and Jana gana mana, described several incidents on Rahman’s life and his association with the maestro. It brought out several nuances on Rahman’s personality-like his abiding faith in the Supreme, his spirituality, devotion to his mother and a yen for perfection expressed in simple straight responses tinged with humour.

Rahman’s passion for creativity, his evolution as a master of several genres of music and as a producer, were projected. Rahman made venerable references to great directors like K Balachander, K Viswanath and Maniratnam. The personal references to Mani who drew the best in Rahman were evocative.

The short 45 minute session, squeezed amidst the busy schedule of Rahman, did not provide for discussion of wider issues. Like the fiasco of Rahman’s UN concert and the humongous loss suffered by Sankara Nethralaya that organised it on 15 August 2016.
