Roaring Ro-Ro facility

Roaring Ro-Ro facility

Gujarat offers the most exemplary example of port development. In the 1990s, Gujarat had just one major port at Kandla. It set up 41 ports on the C-shaped coastline with considerable forethought and effort. The state government encouraged private parties to set up a slew of ports. Some of them channel more traffic than even those designated as major ports! The cargo handled, for instance, by Reliance Jamnagar Port of around 120 million tonnes, beats the total Cargo handled by the three major ports of Tamil Nadu at Chennai, Ennore and Tuticorin hands down!

More such state-of-the-art ventures are coming up. The latest being the inauguration of the world-class roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service through Sea of Khambhat connecting Gogha in Bhavnagar district with Dahej in Baruch district. This facility offers notable savings in both time and costs. Presently, it takes 8-hours by road to cover the two towns. The new facility cracks it in just about an hour! More importantly, this Rs 650 crore ferry service project can carry 70 trucks, 100 four-wheelers and 500 passengers!
