More tributes to GR

There have been several references to my review of the Memoir by the renowned civil servant G Ramachandran (How adroitly GR walked with giants, IE Dec 2013). I met GR on 18 November. He was on a wheel chair, rather weak and reminisced on some of his experiences. He battled against cancer and passed away on 22 November. It was providential that his family succeeded in prevailing upon him to dictate his memoirs. His elephantine memory and sharp intellect provided for one of the finest recordings of  nearly four decades of his walking with giants.  I received a call from the Prime Minister’s Personal Secretary I S Chaturvedi conveying the condolence of the PM who had worked along with GR for long. V Ramachandran, another illustrious civil servant of the Kerala cadre who succeeded GR at the PMO, has recalled GR as his mentor. Another close friend S Sethuraman, the renowned economic journalist who worked with PTI with distinction, recalled GR’s simplicity and vast knowledge on men and matters.

I again express my concern over the lack of suitable recognition by the state, the media and intelligentsia in general to the services of such outstanding men, outside politics, films, art and sports.
