B H Kothari - a tribute

In the untimely demise of Bhadrashyam Kothari (54) the Chennai business world has lost a  dignified and pleasant-faced entrepreneur.

A scion of the Kothari family that made a name in stock broking nearly eight decades ago, Shyam focused on finance (mutual funds), sugar and petrochemicals. His father H C Kothari and uncle D C Kothari built a wide range of industrial enterprises that included textiles, sugar, investments, stock broking, instant coffee, tea and heavy chemicals. The division of the empire between the brothers left sugar, the investment business and petrochemicals as Shyam’s share. Dhirubhai Ambani was so  impressed by Shyam that he married his daughter Nina to him. Shyam has been involved in the vast expansion of the Ambani empire in south India. Only last year he performed the wedding of his daughter Nayantara in grand style.

In the 1990s Shyam leveraged on the strengths of the renowned Investment Trust of India Ltd to set up the Kothari Pioneer Mutual Funds. It recorded phenomenal growth. The company was sold off to high profit and the money was ploughed back to strengthen the finances of the group.

In his demise in Houston, a bright star of the Kothari Group had fallen. Our condolences to the bereaved family.
