Indians have given the world a number of precious things: the magic number zero, principles of astronomy, medicine, number system to name just a few. But not much in recent times.

A Doctorate in organic chemistry, did post-doctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley. He had a long scientific career at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India and headed three of its larger national laboratories: Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Assam; Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad; and Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Madras.

During his tenure as Director CLRI, he initiated number of projects and worked closely with the Indian leather sector. He held the offices of Science Advisor to the Commonwealth Secretary-General and Secretary of the Commonwealth Science Council, London during 1987-1991.

A COUNTRY WHICH once flourished with new ideas that stirred the world, today seems to be stuck in the past and appears resting on its old laurels. “The question now is why India is unable to cross the hump and go forward. “We can always diagnose and find what went wrong; I prefer rectifications and solutions,” said Dr G Thyagarajan (GT), Former Director, Central Leather Research Institute. 

With a passion for science and a mission to take it to the masses, GT spots the missing link that hinders innovation. “Our higher education system that produces post graduates and doctorates in large numbers, is on par with global output; but the missing link lies in their not applying education for practical purpose,” reasoned GT.

Technical universities to entrepreneurial university

A post-graduate who comes out of college has a degree but lacks the exposure to start an industry. He lacks knowledge about industry economics, trade and marketing and ends up at a routine job. “This trend has to change and we need to encourage youngsters to become entrepreneurs. To bridge this gap our technical universities should become entrepreneurial universities. We need a new paradigm, that the graduates along with knowledge should be imbibed with the necessary skills to apply them,” stressed GT. He described entrepreneurial university as one where students would be allowed to brainstorm on various issues and come out with the optimal solutions. Along with education, a student should be made to understand the nuances of economics, marketing and trade. Only then an invention can become an innovation, he argued.

World over innovation is fostered right from school. The strong tie up with the industry at the university level provides a platform to enhance creativity and entrepreneurial skills of students by finding solutions for industry problems.
