Crafting the big Plan

The worlds largest democracy has declared its verdict for a stable government. Hopes within the country have soared high. IE has gathered views from a few experts on their expectations. Excerpts

Education: India’s population is 3 times that of USA. Therefore, statistically, India should have 3 times bright people that USA has. We should be producing 6000 PhDs in engineering against 700-800 produced at present.  Only then can we lead in research and innovation.

Power:  Normally, transmission and distribution losses should be 8 to 10 per cent. In India, losses that include theft, account for 30 to 40 per cent. Some geographies like Delhi have losses that were over 50 per cent.  India needs to redesign and revamp systems and get into smart relaying and metering to reduce losses.
Computerisation:Information Technology includes both software and hardware.  India’s hardware market is miniscule. Software is 90 per cent exported and only 10 per cent used in India.  Software is essentially in English. This leads to a question what happens to Indians who do not know English.  Computerisation is part of modernisation.  India needs software in Indian languages and a hardware industry comparable to China’s.
Agriculture:  Why India’s productivity is low? Are we applying agricultural sciences to address the problem of productivity? Our agriculture problems have solution through the application of science, methodology and proper storage.
