Fun in Khaimah

The heart of the UAE lies in Dubai, with spectacular man-made wonders and a few natural beaches.

Anyone visiting Dubai is awestruck  by the world’s tallest building, the only two 7-star hotels, the innumerable malls, the aquariums, the  boat rides, global cuisine options and, of course, Gold!! Ever wondered what lies outside Dubai apart from the vast areas of sand?

Well, hidden from the rest of the world are the beautiful beach resorts and mountains in the vicinity of Dubai. Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) is one of them.

We set ourselves out for a weekend at Al Humrah Palace Hotel and Beach Resort at RAK. We took off on a Friday afternoon in June with temperatures soaring past 40 degrees. After a quick meal at a food court, our vehicle set off on Emirates Highway, via Sharjah. Passing through the desert, where the golden sands reflecting the Sun’s summer glory, we caught glimpses of herds of camels and goats grazing away amidst the sand dunes in the middle of nowhere.

After a false turning at the end of the freeway, google-mapping, eagle-eyeing landmarks and desperate phone-calling, we landed at the gates of the resort. Breathtaking, indeed! To call it a ‘Palace’ would be an understatement. The hotel is beautifully constructed – typical Middle-Eastern architecture with mighty pillars and chandeliers.

The rooms are nice and cozy, complete with a nice wardrobe and a small refrigerator. Our room, with a balcony faced the golf course and the Palace Hotel.

Having booked for just one night, we decided to explore the place and make the most of it. The hotel houses four restaurants and four bars, a gymnasium, convention centre, as well as a small shop selling souvenirs, general needs, sports equipment and baby stuff.  There is a pathway leading to the Tennis court, swimming pools, play area and their private beach.

The beach had bean bags and cushions placed on the sand to relax and unwind.  If you don’t want to head back to your chalet at night, but rather enjoy the sea breeze and sleep under  the stars, they even have double beds by the bay! On one side, there is a stage where the DJ plays music throughout the evening. We could spot a few folks here and there dancing to the tunes, probably after a shot or two! Competitions were being held for adults and kids, as well as ‘make your own drink’ fiesta.

We headed straight to the pools. After letting the little ones play in the kids’ pool for a while, we plunged into the bigger one. Then we set out to the beach.  The sun was setting. Water was exceptionally warm. After swimming neck-deep, spotting a few sea creatures and a few gulps of extremely salty water, we decided that it is just not our thing.

A swim in the beach later, the boys got busy playing beach volleyball and the girls chit-chatting and walking along the shore.

With hunger having multiplied over the last one hour, we decided to head to the food court in a mall on the highway, just near the hotel. There were few  We spotted a falafel joint, ordered 10 falafel sandwiches (deep-fried ball or patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both, wrapped in pita bread and topped with salads, pickled vegetables, hot sauce, and drizzled with tahini-based sauces) scared that we will run out of those as well! That was probably the best dinner we’ve ever had!

Our journey back home was filled with some pleasant memories and beautiful photographs!
