Since the death of Karl Slym in Bangkok under mysterious conditions, Cyrus Mistry was overlooking the position of CEO and MD. Tata Motors expects to turn around its fortunes with the appointment of Butschek.

The erstwhile Indian automaker Tata Motors on Monday announced the appointment of Guenter Butschek as the next Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. The post of MD has been vacant for two years since the death of Karl Slym.

Butschek was with the aerospace firm Airbus Group as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to Airbus, he was with Daimler AG as president and CEO of Beijing Benz Automotive, a joint venture between Daimler and Beijing Automotive Industrial Holding in China. Working there for more than 25 years, he was overlooking functions such as production, industrialisation and procurement.

Butschek will be overlooking operations of Tata Motors in India as well as global markets such as South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and South Africa. He is expected to join Tata Motors on 15 February 2016.

Cyrus P Mistry, Chairman of Tata Motors said: “Tata Motors is going through an exciting yet challenging phase and the appointment comes at an opportune moment. He brings rich global experience of growing organisations and developing new markets. His ability to lead high performing teams will enable Tata Motors to achieve sustainable as well as profitable growth.”
