The responsible journalist's apology

When the recently concluded Bihar assembly elections was announced, NDA was expected to win with a majority. But as time passed, there was a confusion and at the end, the grand alliance won, which is contrary to the predictions made by various media houses including NDTV. But as a responsible journalist, Prannoy Roy apologised for the mismatch, which no one else did. So can he be called as a responsible journalist?

The responsible journalist's apology

By nine o'clock, less than an hour after the counting began, Prannoy Roy declared that the BJP had won the Bihar election and was likely to win between 145-149 seats, a comfortable majority.  In the end the BJP alliance had not only been smashed to smithereens, so had Dr. Roy’s.

I grew up on my journalism, worshipping Prannoy Roy.  In 1989, he surprised everyone by saying, “Muthuvel Karunanidhi will be the new chief minister of Tamil Nadu,” and that was long before the counting concluded. Then in1991 he predicted with rare accuracy 192 seats for the Congress. Through all that the man who introduced Indians to phrases such as the ‘swing’ and the ‘hung parliament’ and was the only one right on the Jayalalithaa verdict dramatically tripped on an area that was his forte, elections.

But my admiration for Dr. Roy grew because he publicly tendered an unconditionally apology. It was well-worded one and put out on Twitter as well by his organization. It wasn't the kind of sham apology that politicians put out. The contrast was chilling compared to how motor mouth Arnab Goswami of Times Now went about it, public calling names saying it was an intention to be ahead of the number 1 channel. Worse still, Mr. Goswami has had multiple mix ups. The Jayalalithaa court verdict (only NDTV reported it right), the Glasgow imbroglio, the Rohtak sisters’ mess and recently the Delhi traffic signal stupidity are just a few of his highhanded stupidity. The man continues the day later with a straight face, without a trace of apology

While the haters can continue to hate, Roy shows that there is still a whole lot of decency and decorum in the media. Thank you Dr. Roy.
