AAP - change from street fighting to administration

There is understandable euphoria over the Aam Aadmi Party literally sweeping the Delhi polls and capturing power. Arvind Kejriwal and his illustrious team that include Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav deserve credit for reaching out to the masses effectively using the social media. What a revolutionary change in such a short time!

It is gratifying to observe the success of their crusade against corruption and poor governance. However, one is concerned over the difficulties AAP will encounter in adjusting to the change from a street fighter and crusader to that of an administrator with responsibility for effective governance. The new government needs to focus on effective balancing of development and social concerns. It has the experience of Tamil Nadu and other states where the focus on meeting social concerns and populism have retarded growth and vastly shrunk the resources needed for a high rate of growth.

The propensity to permit all and sundry to get into the bandwagon may also crowd the party with street fighters of varied hues from Mallika Sarabhai to Medha Patkar to Udayakumar.  Remember, Udayakumar has stalled the commissioning of the Kudankulam project by a couple of years causing humongous losses to a project cleared decades ago. AAP must define its economic platform in greater detail. Already the hasty announcement of 50 per cent cut in power tariff without waiting for a close study of the economics of power distribution companies has raised serious questions on economic wisdom.
