Connecting the unconnected

A WORLDWIDE survey conducted by CISCO says the Internet is only 8000 days old. Nearly 2.5 billion people and 37 billion things are expected to get connected through the Internet by 2020. Cisco believes that this is just the beginning. “99 per cent of things in the physical world are still unconnected, ready to be woken up,” said V C Gopalratnam, Vice President and CIO of CISCO, a worldwide leader in  networking solutions.

The new connections mean unprecedented opportunities as people, processes, data and things join and interact on the “internet of everything.” With a smartphone or tablet, readers can bring print advertising to life. They can open up a world of videos, case studies, white papers, and info-graphics that they can share, like, follow or download. It proves this massive shift isn’t just coming. It’s happening. The internet transforms, again.

Cisco’s study throws up interesting information about net usage. It states nearly 98 per cent of youth have Facebook Account in India. Gen Y starts the day with checking FB account in India. 34 per cent use laptop, 33 per cent use smartphone, 19 per cent tablets and 7 per cent personal computers. Now a new revolution of smartphones and tablets is going to gear up. There is going to be huge push towards these smart phones as business community is going to tap this area for expanding their opportunities in every industry.

IIM - Trichy satellite centre in Chennai

FORMER SEBI Chairman, M Damodaran, Dr D S Sridhar, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu and Dr. Prafulla Agnihotri, Director IIM -Trichy, inaugurated IIM-T’s Satellite centre in Chennai. The 11th IIM in the country started in 2011 has started offering PG programme in Business Management in Chennai with state of the Art Learning Centre built at a cost of over a crore of rupees, a fully automated RFID-based modern learning facility with CCTV and Wi-Fi connectivity. Damodaran said the process of making IIMs degree-awarding institutions is all set to begin soon.

The committee formed by the HRD Ministry to come up with the draft IIM Bill is set to initiate a process of consultation with all stakeholders within a short span of time. The stakeholders would include students as well. The bill was aimed at making the IIMs Institutions of national importance thereby providing them the legal backing to award degrees.

Older IIMs have churned out bright managers to sell soaps, cigarettes and cattle food. Hopefully the newer ones will produce graduates who will be involved in enhancing quality of health, sanitation and education in the country.
