Global provider for solar energy services, Sun Edison recently launched solar pumps for agriculture. ”Based on our research we found that farmers get free electricity for irrigation at unearthly hours. Many use diesel pumps and it eats into their earnings,” said Pasupathy Gopalan, President Asia Pacific, GCC and South Africa. Photo volatic solar pumps have been installed in 250 locations across Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The pumps are offered in 3HP, 5HP, 7.5HP and 10HP variants. A 3HP variant costs about Rs 4.5 lakh and can irrigate 1.5lakh litre/day if the water table is 20 m below. The company has specially designed the power electronics meter which adjusts the power generated before feeding it into the motor. With sunshine through the day, farmers can use this for cash crops that requires proper water monitoring. The company plans to foray into emerging markets like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Bangladesh by 2014-15.
