OBO Bettermann for better lightning protection

With the number of hi-rise buildings going up, lightning protection has become a must. The multi-storied Mugalivakkam building that came crashing after fierce lightning once again intensified the importance of safety.

The 103-year old German company, OBO Bettermann a leader in cable management and protection systems, has set up its green field facility at Sriperumbudur. The company is focused on lightning protection for railways and telecom. With an investment of Rs 80 crore, the plant will manufacture about 3000 products: “we expect a turnover of Rs 30 crore this year. By 2017 we plan to increase investment in the plant by Rs 197 crore,” said Gopa Kumar, Managing Director, OBO Bettermann India. Kumar pointed to the products being high in quality and technology: “the Indian Standards for electrical specification 35 years old. After working with various stake holders and the government, Bureau of Indian Standards has accepted to revise and upgrade the standard”, said Kumar.

 The facility will provide employment to over 230.

“When we opened our office in South Africa, a lady said that she was disappointed that we had used their country’s resources and land but not the local talent. That was when I learnt that localisation was necessary to penetrate into a market,” said Andreas Bettermann, CEO of OBO Bettermann. The company offers 98 per cent localisation at this facility.

With Chennai as base the company plans to export its products to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Middle East.
