Innovation that helped Chennai port

The Cargo Scope International Conference and Exhibition 2015 was organised at the Chennai Trade Centre. Inaugurating the event, S G Prabhakaran, President of Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry pointed to how the Madras Port Trust was set up on the initiative of MCCI.

Atulya Misra, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust, briefed on how Chennai Port survived through increasing competition from Kattupalli, Ennore, Krishnapatnam, Karaikal and few other nearby ports.

“We signed MoUs with transport companies and also with railways for quick transportation of cargo. RFID systems were setup to facilitate quicker servicing. In order to avoid congestion, we commissioned 8 lanes to let ships come in,” he said. All these paved way for a profit of Rs 23 crore and now Chennai Port Trust is a strong competitor for the other ports around.
