An aerospace-defence cluster in Tamil Nadu…

“Not stopping with technology that helps us penetrate through land, sea and air, we need to aim for space,” said Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, chief controller (R&D) and CEO and MD Brahmos Aerospace Pvt., Ltd.

Addressing at the fifth edition of TN Manufacturing Summit organised by CII, he pointed to the potential of the automobile components industry in Tamil Nadu, which if raised to higher standard, can manufacture parts for aerospace and defence. Tamil Nadu has 760,000 MSME units, which is 15 per cent of India’s total. These MSMEs can serve large clientele if they are provided access to better technology. 5 million tonnes of titanium in the coast of Tamil Nadu remains untapped, he said. If this is made into finished products it can be exported to aircraft makers like Boeing and Airbus and to various other Indian firms which are currently importing the same. He suggested development of industrial clusters for armament at Tiruchi, aerospace and defence at Dharmapuri, Thootukudi and Tirunelveli, naval at Kattupalli and Ennore and electronics and engineering at Coimbatore. He pointed to the immense opportunity in defence manufacturing worth $150 billion in the next five years of which $100 billion is to be mandatorily manufactured in India.
