Purdue and IIT-M sign the dotted line

IIT Madras and Purdue University recently signed a MoU that provides for joint supervision of doctoral candidates between the two universities.   Suresh Garimella, Executive Vice President, took the initiative to bring Mitch Daniels, President of Purdue to Chennai to conclude this MoU. Daniels was the Governor of the State of Indiana for two terms in which Purdue is located.

In my visit to Purdue in 2005 I noticed the university establishing close rapport with leading universities in China and Germany. In my interactions, then Dean of Mechanical Engineering, Dan Hirleman, outlined an interesting project:  a group of students from German Technical University worked with a similar group from Purdue on a new project, where the flair of the Germans for design and engineering was complemented by the native genius of the Americans for packaging and marketing.

The present MoU should be expanded to provide for such fruitful exercises and just should not stop with opportunity for tourist visits. Along with its alumnus CNR Rao, National Research Professor, Purdue University plans a lecture series. The inaugural session will be held in Bengaluru and Chennai during January.
