Car-free Bessy

Living close to the Besant Nagar beach, I have borne the brunt of chaotic traffic during weekends. For those who live close to the beach, weekends are nightmare. Thus, the car- free Sunday along the Besant Nagar beach drew a lot of interest. From 6 am to 9 am the stretch along the beach was closed to motorised traffic. The first Sunday saw Mayor Saidai Duraisamy and Corporation Commissioner Vikram  Kapur enjoying the car - free road playing shuttle and cycling. With shuttle courts set on road, people doing yoga and with music and dance, the road sported a carnival look.

Named Namma Chennai Namakke, the movement is similar to the ones in western cities. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) working with the Corporation on this initative is planning similar car-free days for Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Chetpet and T Nagar. This movement began in Coimbatore. Such efforts create a strong bonding among the local community.
