Chennai Metro looking for revival

The authorities of CMRL have now settled with the actual number of passengers who travel the metro regularly. From the initial surge of 25,000 a day, now on an average the metro attracts 8000 commuters on weekdays and 10,000 on weekends. The short stretch from Koyambedu to Alandur, has limited feeder facilities. With extended services expected to be commissioned soon, patronage can increase.

To retain its loyal clientele, CMRL has come up with monthly parking cards. One-month parking card for two-wheelers costs Rs 250; the monthly card for cars is Rs 500. For an additional charge of Rs 100 to Rs 200, people can leave their vehicles overnight at the station. With the trial run between Little Mount and Officers Training Academy just commenced the stretch is expected to open by March 2016.

CMRL also conducted the first underground test run between Thirumangalam Ramp and Anna Nagar Tower. CMRL has permitted film shooting at its facilities for a fee of Rs 4 lakh per hour. CMRL also plans to harvest solar power either over the roof of the shed or at the depot in Koyambedu spread over 26 hectares. With extended routes and better feeder services, the Metro can provide the much needed relief to commuter traffic.
