The sweet tooth of the city
Once a disease that was associated with the rich – diabetes today has broken barriers and spread through all strata of the society. Chennai is fast racing to become the diabetes capital of the country. An Indo- Britain joint initiative, Indo-Britain Health Initiative(IBHI) Diabetes Summit, is planned in January to address this issue. The event is targeted to be the largest ever bilateral healthcare event staged between India and the UK. The main issue that the city faces is the lack of public health centres which are necessary to diagnose diabetes at the early stages. Dr V Mohan, Chairman and Chief of Diabetology, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre, pointed to the lack of trained nurses who could handle the symptoms appropriately.

A delegation from Britain comprising 50 officials from universities and medical technology companies will participate in the summit, which will cover topics such as the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes and obesity.

Prithvi Mohandas, founder-secretary of IBHI and joint managing director of MIOT Hospital, said that the landmark event would serve as a platform to bring together public and private sector experts from both Britain and India to find solution to the growing incidece of diabetes rates in respective countries.

On the Realty hot spot

ALREADY a concrete jungle, Chennai is at its peak in realty. Two independent reports have acknowledged the same. According to two different reports by international property consultants, Knight Frank India and DTZ Insight the South and West suburbs of Chennai will become the hot spots for residential homes. Pallikaranai and Medavakkam in this region have topped the chart among 100 urban centres across the country based on employment, physical infrastructure, connectivity to important locations, access to social infrastructure, planned development, proximity to premium office spaces and land availability.

The residential sites promise huge returns over the next five years (2013- 2017). According to the report, since 2007, over 68,914 residential units have been constructed in South Chennai. Of these, 50,666 units have been absorbed as of the third quarter of 2012.
