The sweet killer

A recent survey conducted by Abbott, a healthcare company and IPSOS, a market research agency among 4150 respondent across eight cities has released the shocking result of Chennai topping the diabetic chart. The main reason is due to high carbohydrate consumption of more than 60 per cent. In Chennai, more than 20 per cent of the population above 20 years and about 40 per cent of the population above 50 years are diabetic. Of the 408 respondents from Chennai, 63 per cent were overweight or obese and only 25 per cent stated that they did regular exercise. In yet another test conducted by Metropolis Health Care, over 1.26 lakh blood samples were tested. Over 1495 samples of children, 62,104 samples of men and 61,557 samples of women were tested and of this over 15 per cent of the samples tested from children between the age group of 0 to 12 were found to be diabetic. India is home to more than 20 per cent of the world diabetic and this is expected to increase.
