Internet is the new oxygen and a day without it is unimaginable. Catching pace with the developed world, India is introducing higher speeds at one end and trying to maximize the reach at the other.

Under the Digital India Project, BSNL will set up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. You can now enjoy this in few areas in Chennai- Broadway (Flower Bazaar) bus stand, KK Nagar RTO and taluk offices, Vandalur Zoo, Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore and at the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram. BSNL plans to cover more areas in two months. Based on the number of people, position and surroundings, one can enjoy 8 mbps speed.

The Wi-Fi service is free for the first 15 minutes for a mobile number in a fortnight. After this free period, users can purchase online coupons to continue surfing. BSNL has already launched 500 Wi-Fi Hotspots across the country and plans to increase them to 2500 in the current financial year. To improve its telecom service, BSNL would be setting up around 25,000 mobile towers in the country, with an investment of Rs 5500 crore.
