The worst is yet to come

With the gleaming sun already up and bright in March, the city can expect much higher temperatures in coming months, thanks to the El Nino effect, where the sea surface temperature becomes warmer and triggers extreme weather events. The floods during December were also related to this effect. Chennai faced such extremes during 1988 and 1998 and a data analysis by the Meteorological Department between 1950 and 2015 shows a clear sign of El Nino now. During this effect, the mean temperature rises by 0.5 degree Celsius between January and May. It’s time to keep us hydrated as the worst heat wave is yet to come.
