CMRL takes off till airport

Reaching the airport from Koyambedu is indeed a daunting task. And this has become history, thanks to the extension of the Metro Rail to the airport. TN Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated the 8.5-kilometre stretch in the presence of the Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu and the Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Pon Radhakrishnan. This will reduce travel time to half an hour. The cost is also much less, at Rs 50, for what would otherwise cost around Rs. 300 by taxi.  This is the first service with a 600-metre tunnel along  the runway of the airport.

“One metro is equal to 16 buses, 300 cars  and 600 two wheelers. It is expected that the CMRL will generate Rs. 7.75 lakh revenue per day,” said Venkaiah Naidu. The interior of the Airport Metro Station, which displayed the history of the CMRL, has been showcased.

Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2017.
