When Marina became the Tahrir Square

The government had thought that they could pass off this Pongal too with promises of Jallikattu before the festival and later say that they were not able to conduct it due to Supreme Court ban. But the people of Tamil Nadu were frustrated with several previous letdowns. The result, the biggest ever protest, post-independence, demanding the conduct of Jallikattu, the rural bull taming sport, was staged across Tamil Nadu. What started as just another protest snowballed across the state to become the Makkal Movement with over 5 lakh people staging a protest in a very civilised manner. Though a demonstration of large scale, for six days 24x7 the whole crowd had no leader, and they shooed away both politicians and cine personalities. The protesters ensured that they were not disturbing the public and also cleaned the protest arena themselves. These were examples of an excellent people movement.
