Metro chugs the green way

The Chennai Metro train not only displaces cars and two wheelers from the road but also does it in a green way. Thirteen elevated stations have been awarded the platinum rating and global leadership recognition from Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The award was for incorporating  green concepts in design, construction and operation, of the transit system.

The 13 stations received a total of 72 points on a maximum of 90. To achieve this rating, the project must satisfy certain mandatory requirements like site selection and planning, water efficiency, energy efficiency, material conservation, indoor environment and comfort, innovation in design, and construction of public transportation.

The first line of 11 km between Koyambedu and Alandur was launched in June 2015 and this was followed by the launch of a 9 km stretch between Little Mount and Chennai Airport in September 2016. The city’s first underground line from Thirumangalam to

Nehru Park is expected to open soon. The Chennai Metro commuters will soon have a mobile App to know the list of stations, routes of the two corridors, distance

between stations and fares. Based on customer feedback, the App will be upgraded to show the distance to the nearest station, nearby landmarks, etc.
