Cricket comes calling to Chennai

Goods and Services Tax of 28 per cent and Entertainment Tax of 25 per cent catapulted minimum ticket price to a whopping Rs.1200 from its base price of Rs. 750. Cricket match starved Chennaites queued by the thousands outside the Chepauk Stadium, some from the previous evening and some from dawn, waiting enthusiastically, with little regard to the searing heat, as market- savvy vendors distributed water and snacks till the counter opened by 10 am. 

The last ODI played here was in October 2015. The city’s league team CSK too was banned from IPL over the past two seasons leaving the state’s cricket fans stranded.  Most tickets available for sale over the counter were sold within hours. The rain-hit match day saw India beat Australia by 26 runs and crowd favourite MS Dhoni unleashed his repertoire of strokes.
