Bewailing monsoons the new fad

The onset of northeast monsoon continues to cause waterlogging, power and traffic problems and deaths, bringing back terrible memories of the 2015 floods. It takes much less rainfall to flood a city now.  A lot of this has to do with poorly planned urbanisation with little regard to encroachment of water bodies, natural reservoirs and drainage systems. Lakes in the city have been unable to retain excess rainwater.  Groundwater is being extracted at an alarming 185 per cent to quench the city’s thirst.  Legislation and orders have failed to prevent illegal groundwater extraction. The absence of measures to conserve the excess rainfall like rainwater harvesting and percolation ponds have turned the coastal aquifers saline. Nothing is to discount the effect of climate change and global warming on the city. ISRO has warned that 3,209 square km of Tamil Nadu’s coast would be submerged over the next 50 years. Ten lakh people are in danger of submergence in Chennai alone. Chennai must join hands, not to pray for lesser rainfall, but to combat these real threats and lead pro-environmental measures.
