A skinny affair

“It is time both researchers and industrialists look at the world around and adopt best standards rather than re-inventing the wheel,” said Dr G Thyagarajan at the 48th leather research industry get together organised by the Central Leather Research Institute(CLRI). He pointed that this industry which claims to be the largest in the world is becoming less polluting and uses advanced technologies like nano technology, synthetic biology and genetic engineering in making leather products without animal skin. This delink from advances in technology has made the industry primitive.

    “Green and advanced technologies for environmental sustainability is the theme for the year. LERIG aims to bring all stakeholders related to the leather industry to discuss and deliberate ideas and concerns,” said A B Mandal, Director of CLRI.

    Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Farida Group pointed to the increasing demand that is expected in 2014-15. The high labour cost in China and the turbulent political conditions in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam offer an increased order prospect for India. He stressed that the Indian manufacturing capacity has to be revamped and expanded to make use of this opportunity.
