Metro chugs through the city

The dream project of the city is closer to become reality. With every inch of development closely watched, the coaches were put to test on the tracks. Costing Rs 14,600 crore the Metro will run 24 km underground and 21 km on elevated tracks. 59 per cent of the cost is being met from a Japan International Cooperation Agency loan, 20 per cent from Central government and the rest from the state government. With a capacity to transport around 1500 people at a time, a single trip of the metro is to displace 16 buses, 300 cars, and 600 two-wheelers off the road.

    Though there are no parking slots nearby, CMRL plans to deploy feeder busses. The trains have two-thirds the coach reserved for ladies. A detailed study on the Phase II of the metro has been started.
