Indian media-operators of democracy

One of the interesting topics to be discussed during times of elections is the role of media. Moderated by G V Ramakrishna, former Member, Planning Commission, T S Krishnamurthy, former Chief Election Commissioner of India and B S Raghavan, former civil servant registered their views. The main role of the media during this time is to portray what the new government should do. Ramakrishna stressed that in this era, it is necessary that right people must be selected based on their efficiency, integrity and experience. He stressed the importance of delegation of authority and minimise the chances of corruption. A small group of technical bureaucrats must be assigned for each sector and provided with authority to take decisions without approval from ministers, he suggested.

B S Raghavan pointed to the major findings of a survey done by the International Press Institute that media has been responsible and has published appropriate news on issues at the right time. Indian media has been playing a major role bridging the gap between the common people and decision makers. He mentioned the emerging role of the cyber media. It was the cyber media that played a major role in promoting the AAP, which made a great success in the Delhi elections in such a short time!

T S Krishnamurthy said that media has a major role in the pre, post and live periods of the elections. They can change the entire characteristics of the elections. He expressed concern over the risk of electronic media manipulating outcome through biased news presentation. He pointed to political parties campaigning in their TV channels even during the campaign silence period and there is no regulation to control it.
