Metro mania

At last, the wait ended when the Metro rail zipped past eager onlookers making its first travel.  Better still it was powered by a woman.  A double plated ‘history’ for sure. By now every Chennaite has facts related to metro on his finger tips and Facebook is flooded with selfies. The inaugural saw eager families, office goers and even some bunking colleges to be part of the first ride. By now the metro train has become yet another weekend getaway.

After six long years, bearing the brunt of traffic congestions, altered routes and confusions, the Chennai Metro comes as a relief to road commuters. Phase I from Koyambedu to Alandur is now a reality. The entire metro stretch passes through several major areas including Anna Nagar, Airport and the Mount Road. Once it is fully operational, urban commuting will become a lot easier.

A plan to integrate all modes through common ticketing is on cards. This is a must and will facilitate ease of travel through various modes like MTC, MRTS and Metro. With better feeder services, Metro will become more attractive. Though rates are high, with services being expanded throughout the city, for the speed and comfort, Metro will be worth the money.  Will it cut down on the cars like in Singapore? Time will tell.
