It is not only your noodle...

After the recent Maggi noodles controversy, concern over food safety has increased throughout the nation. Delivering the Dr C R Krishnamurthi Memorial Endowment Lecture hosted by the Madras Science Foundation, Dr G Thyagarajan, Former Director, CLRI, stressed on the need for better public awareness in issues related to food safety. Thyagarajan cited a similarity of this incidence to the one that occurred during 2003, relating to presence of pesticides in soft drinks. He was then a consultant to the Joint Parliamentary Committee that was formed to investigate the issue. “Apart from identifying the causes for the ingress of contaminants and perceived consequences, the need of the day is concerted efforts from government and academia for strengthening safety in branded foods and building public trust,” said Thyagarajan.

Thyagarajan raised a serious question of how the quality of products manufactured in the MNCs home country safe while there are concerns in other countries. He said: “MNCs should be highly responsible and dedicated to ‘make the Right in India.”

Dr C R Krishnamurthi was an environmental scientist of international repute, in whose honour the endowment lecture was organised. He served as the director of the Indian Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC), Lucknow and was considered the ‘father of toxicology awareness in India.’
