From trash land to tourist spot

For years one can’t escape the obnoxious stench from the dump yard surrounding a beautiful lake near the Chetpet railway station across the NH4. It is a sight of sorrow of how we abuse our environment.

While passing through that place recently, I was surprised to see long queues waiting to go for boating, angling, walking... The dump yard had been converted into an eco-park! The 16 -acre park facilitates boating, fishing, a children’s play area, cafeteria, multi-level car parking,  rain water harvesting and tracks for walking and jogging. There are separate tickets for each of the activity. The Fisheries Department has revived the pond that was once the depository of sewage. It has deployed tertiary level water treatment to treat sewage let into the pond.

Apart from this, a strong storm water drain has also been built to feed the pond with fresh water. Systems are placed to monitor water quality regularly. With the success of this, the TN Water Resources Department, plans restoration of lakes in other areas too. A step in the right direction; if this spreads, it will help in reviving the endangered water bodies and save us from getting flooded!
