Indian of the Year

Once a Chennaite, always a Chennaite, goes a very old saying. You can curse the sun, the traffic, but the minute you cross the city, you start to miss all of it and that is Chennai to you. To be honest, that’s perhaps true of any other city.

Fighting the unprecedented floods, the people stood guard to bring back the city to its feet and today it functions normal. Applauding the grit and oneness, the people of Chennai (Yay! It’s us) were awarded the Indian of the Year by CNN-News18 under the ‘Public Service’ category.   RJ Balaji received the award and said, “the floods were the worst disaster in 100 years for Chennai. But they united the people like never before. Beginning with a handful of people, gradually there were more volunteers than victims on the streets of the city.” He along with actor Siddharth had started the Chennai Micro Fund Trust. Their tweet, #ChennaiMicro became the largest flood relief operation on social media that lent a helping hand to scores of stranded residents.
