Water woes

AFTER WASTING all the flood water last year, Chennai is back to facing a severe water shortage. Already, several areas like Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Nungambakkam and Royapuram, where the population is dependent on the Metro water’s daily supply, are facing a crisis.

Private water tankers are making the most of this hostage and have increased the cost of a 9000 litre load from Rs 700 to Rs 900. The Metro water charges Rs 600 for the same load but it makes only around 1200 paid trips a day, as against the private tankers that make about 10,000 trips a day.

Several pleas of efficient water management and the importance of rain water harvesting have fallen on deaf ears. November 2015 witnessed bountiful rains followed by the record rainfall of over 50 cm on 1 December 2015. In contrast, November this year was dry with the north-east monsoon not set yet. Hopefully, this years’ drought will help people realise the necessity to preserve this dwindling resource.
