A praiseworthy peer recognition
BUSINESS JOURNALISTS OF Chennai came together to record their appreciation for the services rendered by two senior members of their tribe – V Balasubramanian, who retired after a long, distinguished service with the Economic Times, Chennai and S Viswanathan, Editor, IE, for completing 50 years as an economic journalist.

It was  a welcome gesture triggered by the self confidence and assurance of the younger members of the profession.

For long there was the reluctance to share information and interact freely with fellow journalists. There were also the prejudices and loyalties to the paper one worked for. Periodicals specialising in economic journalism were few and far between and their small size did not attract much notice on the part of larger newspapers. IE had to wage a long battle spread over three years in the 1970s to get accreditation for journalists from periodicals. The Accreditation Committee that consisted of representatives from the dailies and news agencies routinely rejected application for accreditation. The bold decision taken by K Subramaniam, Home Secretary during 1976, to pass a GO on IE’s representation paved the way for journalists from periodicals also made eligible for accreditation.

IE suggests the economic journalists to form an association and endeavour to present leaders from different sectors for regular interactions and offer to render assistance.
