Chennai teachers rank low

Of the 2.62 lakh candidates who attended Paper 1 and the 4 lakh candidates who attended Paper 2 of Tamil Nadu Teachers Eligibility Test, results showed that Chennai teachers were poor performers. Chennai teacher’s average was much below the state average of 4.8 per cent in Paper 1 (primary school teachers) and 3.62 per cent in Paper 2 (middle school teachers). Sad that this seems to be happening in the state that effectively pioneered the concept of education for all. Still worse, the state seems to miss the bus in the Central government’s plan to set up model schools in PPP mode.  The DMK supremo has opposed setting up of such model schools in partnership with private players. With government and municipalities running around 90 per cent of primary and secondary schools and with their mediocre record, there is a strong case for upgrading quality through the PPP mode. This is of special importance in the light of the high cost of land and buildings.  Also remember the state refusing to avail of the munificent grants made available for setting up Navodaya Schools in districts on grounds of opposition to Hindi.

Perhaps these results that reflect the poor quality of education imparted will ring the bells in the ears of higher authority to liberate education from its current shackle.
