Ennore Port excels

The twelfth major port of India, Kamarajar Port Ltd. (KPL) has shown an impressive growth in cargo traffic for 2013-14. While coal traffic was up by 50 per cent to 22.49 million tonnes (14.93 MTPA in FY 2012-13), petroleum, oil and lubricants traffic had doubled.

‘Our cargo traffic for this year has increased over 50 per cent to 27.34 million tonnes while all India average growth was just 2 per cent’ said Senthil Kumar, General Manager of Operations, KPL, at a trade meet organised by KPL along with Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry(MCCI). The formerly known Ennore Port currently has 6 berths with a capacity of 30 MTPA.

On cards for expansion is a 730m container Terminal  for 1.40 million 20 feet and equivalent units and a 2 MTPA capacity multi cargo terminal. Their decadal dream came true with a third coal berth of 647 acres for the TNEB and its JV, scheduled to be completed by 2016-17. Rs 4512 crore project for setting up a LNG Terminal with 5 MTPA capacity is expected to be constructed in 3 years. The above four development projects involve an investment of about Rs 6300 crore aimed to add 39 MT to make the port handle 69.3 MTPA.

Currently the port handles over 2 lakh automobiles and this export has gone up by 40 per cent over the previous year. In the current fiscal, KPL handled 689 vessels against 475 vessels last fiscal.  Overall its gross revenue has peaked to Rs 502 crore, registering a growth of 57 per cent. Likewise, its net profit too has shown a handsome hike of 83 per cent to Rs 316 crore.
