Building highs and lows

15 July, 2014 could be marked for the announcements that came as a big relief to the city commuters. Firstly, the state CM J Jayalalithaa announced plans to build seven subways at a cost of Rs 23 crore by the end of this year. Her plans also extended to build five bridges.

On the same day, another surprise came from the Centre. Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda announced in the Lok Sabha that the Royapuram railway station would be made the third terminal station in the city. With the congested Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore stations, this third terminal is indeed welcome. Commuters are in for more relief with the CMRL completing the work on its first tunnel between Koyambedu and Shenoy Nagar. By this year end, it has plans to finish laying tracks in the Guindy-Alandur stretch too and would soon begin commissioning these projects.

Among the big ticket investments is the Rs 12,000 crore allotted for development of Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor and upgradation of NH4, NH7 and NH46 along with Peripheral Ring Road connection Mahabalipuram and Ennore Port.
