To mark a momentous day in the history of organ transplantation in India, surgeons from Global Hospitals successfully performed five transplantations in fewer than 12 hours.

At the Global Health City, eight procedures including the five transplants, were performed. In a first in the country, a liver from a deceased donor had been split and transplanted to two adults. Normally a liver split happens between an adult and a child because of its limited sufficiency. To be able to split between two adults is rare, even in the western countries and Chennai has set a milestone.

The other three transplantations were of two kidneys from deceased donor and a liver from living donor. Dr Mohamed Rela, Director, Institute for Liver Disease and Transplantation, explained that the transplants included procedures like cadaver donor multi-organ harvesting, ex-vivo splitting of the liver into two grafts, two cadaver split liver transplants, two kidney transplants, one living donor hepatectomy and living donor recipient liver transplant.
