Green crimes galore

Telangana features in the top five on that notorious list of environmental violations.  The pharmaceutical industry is the biggest malefactor. Dismal monitoring and a small penalty of Rs. 50 are the causes for repeated offenses. By considering green violations as a criminal offence and empowering the PCB, the police say one can reduce such crimes. Also, ground leveling, digging, tunneling and pipeline laying work are being carried out in flagship projects like Palamur-Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme and Mission Bhagiratha, without obtaining necessary approvals from the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
